Richard Karl Freiherr von Weizsäcker (Apr 15, 1920 — Jan 31, 2015) was the sixth president of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1984 until 1994. Richard von Weizsäcker was engaged in the German Protestant Church: from 1964 until 1970, and again from 1979 until 1981 he served as president of the German Evangelical Church Assembly (German: "Deutscher Evangelischer Kirchentag"), and from 1967 until 1984, he was a member of the synod of the German Protestant Church (German: Evangelische Kirche in Deutschland) - the federation of twenty Lutheran, Reformed, and United (territorial) churches in Germany.
Weizsäcker was a member of the then-conservative Christian Democratic Union.
