The derogatory term "hoser" comes from the pre-Zamboni days of hockey.[1] In the days before the advent of the Zamboni, it was necessary to flood the rink at the conclusion of the game. The losing team would often have to perform this task, by "hosing" down the ice. The match losers were then referred to as "hosers".[2]
