'American Academy of Religion (AAR) was formed in 1964 by renaming National Association of Biblical Instructors, which had been formed in 1909. Originally, the organization was a professional society for campus and prep school ministers and religious instructors. In 1979 the ACLS admitted the AAR as a leading humanities organization composed primarily of scholars and professors.
