Template:Expand The marketplace of ideas is the figurative center of the world of academic and political discourse. In a free market of ideas, the best ideas will attract the most adherents, just as the cheapest or highest quality products will attract the most customers.

Dictatorships thwart the expression of ideas, lest the people combine to overthrow the regime by exposing errors in the official ideology.
