The Amazon effect is extraordinary impact that the online retailer Amazon has on an industry when Amazon enters the market.

For example, on June 16, 2017, the announcement of Amazon's offer to purchase the grocery chain Whole Foods caused a sharp, immediate drop in the stock value of other grocery chains, including even the mammoth Walmart.
