Malay (Malay: Bahasa Melayu) Is an Austronesian language, it has official status in Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. It is spoken by 290 million people across the Strait of Malacca, including the coasts of the Malay Peninsula and the eastern coast of Sumatra.

As the National Language (Malay: Bahasa Nasional or Bahasa Kebangsaan) of several states Malay has various official names, in Brunei and Singapore it is known as Bahasa Melayu (Malay Language); in Malaysia Bahasa Malaysia (Malaysian language); and in Indonesia Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language).

The closest languages to Malay are those found in Sumatra such as Minangkabau.
