In music, an ornament is an addition to a musical line of a flourish that is for a purely decorational, rather than a necessary structural purpose. These are sometimes written down, but often improvised in several styles. When written, they are denoted either by various symbols, or with notes written in smaller type. The latter type is often called a "grace note."
