False witness is speaking falsely against someone else before a tribunal or court, as prohibited by the Ten Commandments.[1]

The punishment for false witness was to force the witness to endure the same punishment that the original defendant would have received had the false witness not been discovered.

The prohibition against false witness has been expanded, particularly under Christianity, to prohibit other lies in other circumstances.
