The word abyss means a massive bottomless depth or chasm, which could be a pit in the earth, a sink hole or a canyon underwater.

In a religious sense, the term abyss is sometimes used as a synonym for Hell. It is also used as a term for the primeval chaos from which the universe was formed in some mythologies which is also featured in Paradise Lost.
