A personal attack is an insult directed at a specific person. The term personal attack is usually used to describe an irrelevant personal attack, i.e. an attack directed at one person but used against a group to which they belong. Another example of a personal attack would be an ad hominem attack.

"Personal attacks are difficult and shouldn't occur in a debate in a civilized society. ... They usually indicate a person or group is losing the debate."[1]
