Freedom 7

Freedom 7 also know as Mercury-Redstone 3 was a mission to launch the first American into space. The spacecraft was launched by NASA on May 5, 1961, using the Mercury-Redstone Rocket, carrying Alan Shepard.[1] The Redstone launch vehicle (a modified ballistic missile) on a ballistic trajectory suborbital flight—a flight which carried him to an altitude of 116 statute miles and to a landing point 302 statute miles down the Atlantic Missile Range.
