The Mandate of Palestine, also known as Mandatory Palestine, was a British overseas territory that existed form 1920 to 1948. The capital was Jerusalem. The prior to World War I, the area has been ruled by the Ottomans. The mandate specified that the area would be a "Jewish National Home." The Arabs, who at this time viewed the area as "Southern Syria," protested the mandate.[1] The was an Arab revolt against British rule in 1936-1939. In 1947, the United Nations General Assembly voted to partition the Mandate into Jewish and Arab states. Israel was founded by the Yishuv, or Jewish community, in 1948.
