Jeffersonian Republicans

The Jeffersonian Republicans was a U.S. political party led by Thomas Jefferson. It was based on the Anti-Administration Party, a congressional faction in 1789 to 1792 led by James Madison. The party opposed strong central government. When Andrew Jackson ran for president in 1824, the party split into Jacksonian and Anti-Jackson factions. The modern Democratic Party traces its origins to the Jacksonian faction.
When it existed, the party was known as the Republicans. The creation of the modern Republican Party in 1854 created a need to distinguish the two parties. For this reason, the anachronistic name Democratic Republican Party is sometimes applied to this organization.
