Shoehorning is the process of force-fitting some current affair into one's own agenda, e.g., to make something look like a confirmation of a claim after the fact. Shoehorning is different from determining whether the current affair agrees or disagrees with a concrete, falsifiable hypothesis that has already been made.

Examples

  • Believers in evolution shoehorn such things as the development of drug resistance by microorganisms into their dogma.
  • Muslims assert that current events fulfill prophecies in the Qur'an while not admitting that they are reinterpreting those prophecies to fit the current events.
