Ethelred I (also Æthelred I) king of Wessex (865-871), the younger brother of Ethelbert and the third son of Ethelwulf to take the throne, faced the first major systematic attempt by the Danes to conquer England. Having defeated and occupied East Anglia and Northumbria, and moved down into Mercia during the first years of his reign, they moved against Wessex in the winter of 870/71. Ethelred died campaigning and was succeeded by his younger brother, Alfred. (Alfred the Great)
