The Battle of Adys fought in 256 B.C. was part of the First Punic War fought between Carthage and Rome. The Romans had landed in Africa after the Carthaginians had been unable to stop them at the naval battle of Cape Ecnomus. An army of 20,000 men under Regulus then won the decisive battle, forcing Carthage to sue for peace. The terms were so harsh, however, that Carthage continued the war, which would then be fought for 15 more years.
