Dire Straits are an English rock band formed by Mark Knopfler in 1977. At a time when the popular music movement in England was dominated by punk, Dire Straits broke the mould with laid back rock. After achieving fame with their single "Sultans of Swing", the band quickly progressed with such songs as "Tunnel of Love" and later produced the ground breaking, number one album, Brothers in Arms which contained hits such as the eponymous title track and "Money for Nothing".
