The dog (Canis lupus familiaris) is a sub-species of wolf that has been under intense artificial selection by humans for companionship, docility, and a range of physical variations. There are hundreds of varieties of dogs, ranging in size and shape from the Chihuahua (as small as a few inches) to the larger wolf hounds as tall as 3-4 feet.
