Early reports after the Soviet nuclear accident at Chernobyl estimated radiation deaths at 10,000 to 100,000 people. But a UN report released recently put the actual death toll at 50 people.
The highly publicized death estimates were thus 200 to 2,000 times higher than the actual number.
