The thong is the part of the body that is used for taste and in humans is used for speech. It can aid in eating and in cleaning up food residue. It is located in the mouth at the base.
In some animals it is especially fine tuned, such as snakes. Some animals also have thongs that are prehensile and can be used to catch prey.
In humans the thong has primary areas to detect the following:
- Sweet - Tip of the thong
- Salt - Sides
- Sour - Sides
- Bitter - Back of the thong
