Danny Ray McCormick (born November 24, 1960) is the Republican state representative for District 1 in Caddo and Bossier parishes in northwestern Louisiana. The district is north of Shreveport. With 5,466 votes (51 percent), he defeated two fellow Republicans, Randall Liles and James Harper, who finished wqith 4,471 votes (42 percent) and 709 (7 percent), respectively. The turnout of registered voters in the primary election was only 44.3 percent.[1] McCormick, a conservative, succeeded the term-limited Jim Morris, a former Moderate Republican-turned-Independent from the rural community of Belcher, also in Caddo Parish.
McCormick is a resident of Oil City, a community with a population of one thousand located only two miles from the Texas border and six miles from the Arkansas state line. He is the manager of the Suedan Company, L.L.C.[2] A spokesman for rural America, McCormick founded the Caddo Parish Alliance and Caddo Lake's Last Stand, a citizens' group which opposes the proposed federal project, the Caddo Lake National Heritage Area.[3]
Even before taking office, McCormick called upon his future legislative colleagues to address the population decline in many rural areas. In 1960, 55 percent lived in small towns and rural communities; that number is now just 16 percent. "We’re seeing our small communities die before our very eyes, and we’re not doing anything."[4] This rural-to-urban migration has left fewer high school graduates, higher unemployment, less income, and shorter life expectancies. Such ranking place Louisiana in 49th or 50th places on many issues.[4]
In July 2020, McCormick in a video said that he opposes compulsory masks during the coronavirus pandemic. He liked such mandatory masks to the Nazis and the Holocaust" "Government needed a villain. People who don't wear masks will be soon painted as the enemy just as they did to Jews in Nazi Germany. Now is the time to push back before it's too late. We can preserve America."[5]
