Benjamin Spock (1903-1998) was a pediatrician who wrote the 1946 book Baby and Child Care. It emphasized self-reliance in parents and encouraged mothers to act on their natural instincts to touch and cuddle infants. The opening sentence is "Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do".
However, the book has undergone substantial revision over the years because some of the advice it gave was contentious, if not downright harmful. Early editions, for example, recommended lying babies face down to sleep. We now know that this is a contributory factor in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS, or Cot Death) and that babies should be placed on their back.
