-The Battle of Passchendale was also known as the Third Battle of Ypres. This third battle was fought in Ypres, Belgium which had seen two previous battles, one in 1914 and one one 1915. The Third Battle of Ypres lasted 4 months beginning in 1917 was to relieve pressure from the French troops who had low morale after their own terrible losses of the Nivelle Offensive.
-In this battle the British hid 19 huge land mines underneath the German lines. Unfortunately for the British, once the land mines exploded, the British did not move fast enough and became bogged down by the ensuing rain.
-In October 1917, the Canadian Corps, under Sir Arthur Currie was called upon to complete the battle, after their victory at the Battle of Vimy Ridge.  Currie felt that the battle would of little value and a high cost.  After two weeks of fighting the Canadians would capture the town, although the losses were high.  Of 20,000 initial Canadian troops nearly 75% (15,654) were either killed or wounded.  It total the Allies suffered 325,000 casualties and the Germans 260,000.
-This battle ended as another stalemate for the Allies.  The battle had become another instance of Generals fighting current battles with old tactics at horrific losses.
