Iron (Fe) is a ferromagnetic metal.
The technology to forge iron into weapons was discovered in the near east sometime around 1150 BC. Iron is much stronger than bronze and has many other advantages. Iron was used in construction but has since been replaced by steel. The Eiffel Tower and Golden Gate Bridge are both made of iron. Iron will oxidize at when in contact with water. These iron oxides are commonly called rust. It is one of the few magnetic elements (nickel and cobalt are the others). Iron is one of the main elements used to make steel, along with carbon and trace amounts of other metals.
Iron is also a component of red blood cells in the form of hemoglobin.
