Decimalisation is the process of changing to a decimal system of measurement; the term is generally applied to the change of a national currency to a decimal system, as in the United Kingdom, when on 15 February 1971 the currency system was changed from the 'pounds, shillings and pence' (L.s.d.) system of 12 pence to one shilling, and twenty shillings to one pound (i.e. 24o pence to one pound), to a decimal system of one hundred new pence to one pound.
