The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States. Arriving at the entrance of New York harbor on June 17, 1884, the Statue of Liberty has proudly stood there ever since. The statue stands nearly 150 feet tall and is a woman with her arm held high with a lit torch. In her other hand she is clutching a book.
In 1903 an inscription was added on the inside which reads, in part:
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
It was designated as a national monument in 1924.[1] See: The New Colossus
