Seals are large seafaring animals of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Despite having smooth skin, scientists classify them as being mammals. Seals are distingushed from sealions because they have flippers instead of back feet, and ears. They resemble large otters, but are fatter because they have a protective layer of blubber beneath their skin.

Seals have been known to man since antiquity; however, they are not mentioned in the Bible because there are no species of seal native to the Mediterranean or the Red Sea. They feed mainly on fish and seaweed.

In legal terminology, to seal is to mark a document with a seal; to authenticate or make binding by affixing a seal. As a noun in legal terminology, a seal is a court seal or a corporate seal.

"Seals" is also the name of a branch of the Navy. Famous Navy Seals include Theodore Roosevelt IV; Gary Jackson, the president of Blackwater; and Roy Boehm, reputedly the inspiration for Marlon Brando's character in Apocalypse Now.
