Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus is an infectious disease first seen in the UK in 1961. [2]. The disease declined in the 1970's but re-emerged in hospitals in Eastern Australia in the late 1970's. [3]. A global epidemic that has been growing in prevalence over the last forty years, the condition occurs most frequently among persons in hospitals and healthcare facilities who have weakened immune systems. The disease is also seen among athletes, military recruits, children, Pacific Islanders, Alaskan Natives, Native Americans, gay men, and prisoners.[4]
The new gay plague is a term for this disease used by some who observe that the disease is spreading through San Francisco's homosexual community (the "infection is 13 to 14 times more prevalent in homosexual men than for the general population") in early 2008.[1]
