Sudan (or The Sudan, Arabic السودان), officially the Republic of the Sudan, is an East African country. Sudan is the largest African country by area, and the 10th largest country in the world by area. The capital of Sudan is Khartoum, and the president is Omar al-Bashir. The country has a population of approximately 33 million (2006 estimate).[1] Since 2003, Sudan has come under serious international scrutiny for the Darfur conflict, a government-sponsored ethnic cleansing campaign against black Africans by the Arabic Janjaweed militias.[2]

  • Arab governments actively support the genocidal Sudanese regime, which thus far has murdered 400,000 civilians and displaced 2.5 million. [1]

Relations with the West were improved somewhat in late 2007, when a British teacher convicted of "insulting Mohammad" was pardoned after two days in jail.
