Welfare is a government program paid for by the taxpayers that gives money to the poor through wealth redistribution. It is strongly opposed by most conservatives, who consider it to be a socialist policy. The term has a slight negative connotation.

Welfare in the United States

Welfare in the United States has been growing for many years. The basis was established by President Franklin Roosevelt, and extended by Lyndon B. Johnson and the Great Society. Welfare is used to push socialist policies in the United States. This is shown by the fact that the top 50% of Americans pay over 96% of the taxes. (Jackson, 2007) Welfare also comes in the forms of food stamps, free school lunches, and Medicaid.

Corporate Welfare

This is a term used pejoratively by those who oppose business subsidies. It implies that the poor are more needy of money than corporations.
