Carthage was an ancient city on the coast of northern Africa near modern day Tunis. It began as a colony of the Phoenicians and eventually became powerful enough to compete with Rome. One of the most famous Carthagians was Hannibal, who enjoyed travelling to the Alps with his elephants. There was also St Cyprian of Carthage, a bishop who got his head chopped off by the Romans.
