Ethiopia is an African country bordering Sudan, Eritrea, Kenya and Somalia. With the exception of the Italian occupation of 1936-1941, Ethiopia is the only African country to never have been colonised by a European imperialist power.(see CIA World Fact Book:[1]). A bloody border dispute with Eritrea following that country's secession in 1991 has claimed many lives, and the country has experienced a number of famines in the past century. Perhaps most notable of thse are the 1974 famine that led to the Marxist ouster of Emperor Haile Selassie and the 1984-1985 famine that inspired Bob Geldof to begin the Band Aid/Live Aid project.
