- I'm going to rescind / expand on some of what I just said, with the caveat that I've not yet had my morning coffee: My understanding of astroturfing would be something like a developer forming "West Podunk Citizens for Economic Justice" as a way to blunt opposition to his plan to turn a wetlands area into parking lots. But a quick look on the web shows my notion is too narrow--astroturfing also refers to lobbying groups pretending to be a different sort of group. What also happens, too, is an organization will encourage folks to send letters to their local newspaper, giving the appearance of wide-spread (decentralized) support for a given opinion.
