National Geographic magazine was first published in October, 1888. The magazine is famed for its photos from all over the world, and is dedicted to sharing information about wildlife, cultures, and promoting preservation of natural habitats. In recent years many articles in the magazine have focused on environmental issues. The nonprofit National Geography Society was founded in January 1888 in Washington, D.C., by a group of 33 men who desired to form a society "for the increase and diffusion of geographical knowledge.” [1] Alexander Graham Bell became president of the society in 1898. His leadership was key to increasing membership and revenue. [2] The magazine is published monthly in many languages and has a worldwide circulation of nearly nine million. [3]
