Malwarebytes is an anti-malware program, available in both free and paid versions. It is designed primarily to operate alongside an anti-virus program. However, the paid version also includes an anti-virus module.[1]
Advantages
- Designed to detect harder-to-find malware
- Multiple scanning modes
- Single-file or directory scanner (available from the context menu)
- Frequent updates, from their own lab
- Works alongside other anti-malware software[2]
- File/program white-listing[2]
- Relatively high detection rate of new malware[1]
- "Chameleon" feature, allowing the software to run even when malware attempts to block it[1]
- Command-line scan triggering[2]
Disadvantages
- Free version does not offer realtime guard
- Is not always sufficient as a primary defense (and is not designed to be)[1]
History
In 2004, Marcin Kleczynski picked up some malware on his computer, and had a hard time removing it, even though he was using paid anti-virus software. He decided to do something about it, and did just that.[3]
