His intent was to restrict immigration from countries that are rife with terrorism – as a temporary emergency measure – until the government could figure out a long term solution.

The proposed ban, actually a temporary suspension, was blocked for several months by various federal judges. In late June 2017, however, the U.S. Supreme Court lifted the block and agreed to hear the case.[2]
Trump said:
