Died July 31, 1875
Term 1865-1869

Andrew Johnson was the 17th President of the United States of America. He was the first President to be impeached, but he was acquitted by one vote. The reason for impeachment was his violation of the Tenure of Office Act, which denied him the power to dismiss presidential appointees without the Senate's permission.

Accession to Presidency

He became President in 1865 after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre while watching the play "Our American Cousin".

Impeachment

He was summoned to trial for "high crimes and misdemeanors." He avoided impeachment by only one vote. [1]
