Morphine is a narcotic pain reliever used to treat moderate to severe pain. Like all narcotics, it directly effects the central nervous system's pain perception center and has no anti-inflammatory properties. Though it is typically administered intravenously, both extended-release and instant-release tablets are available.

Like other narcotics, morphine can be habit forming. Physical dependence is common after long term use, with patients becoming physically ill upon cessation of morphine therapy. It is used illicitly, producing euphoric effects similar to that of heroin.

Morphine is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance in the United States.
