Windows Defender is an anti-virus program which is included with the Windows operating system which attempts to combat the problem of virus vulnerability. This program is embedded in Windows Vista and all later versions so far. However, it is not enabled by default on most. In host cases, you must go to its settings page and manually enable it.
Enable/Disable
The official directions for toggling Windows Defender's real-time protection on Windows 7 are as follows:
- "Open Windows Defender by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type Defender, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Defender.
- Click Tools, and then click Options.
- Click Real-time protection, and then select the Use real-time protection (recommended) check box.
- Select the options you want, and then click Save. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation."[1]
These directions vary slightly from system to system, but the basic method should be the same.
