The idea behind death panels is that health care is too expensive for the government to afford for everyone, so it must be decided who receives care and who does not.  The young and productive will usually be treated, while the elderly, disabled, and mentally impaired may not, since they "are not productive members of society" and "will have a low quality of life."  So far, this has been an inevitable end to socialized medicine.  Only privately funded healthcare systems have been able to avoid this, such as the system the most of the U.S.A. had prior to ObamaCare.

Also known as Death Counsel, a Death Panel is a group of unelected individuals who choose who is granted treatment, and who is not. This term was most recently revived by Sarah Palin when she referred to Obama Death Panels.[1] She correctly pointed out ObamaCare would at some point involve these, as treatment is rationed.
