Pundit is an expert or opinion-leader who analyzes events in his or her area of expertise.

Etymology from India

The etymology of the word pundit comes the original ancient Sanskrit word "Paṇḍita" used in India at least since 200 B.C. to refer to a very learned man or scholar in the realm of Indian philosophy, Hinduism (the Vedas and Upanishads), Buddhism (the Dharma of the Sutras - Shastras), or the "Five Sciences". These five sciences include medicine (Ayurvedic medicine or cikitsāvidyā), language (śabdavidyā), logic (hetuvidyā), arts - crafts (śilakarmasthānavidyā), and religion (adhyātmavidyā). An example is Sakya Pandita of Tibet.
