Free German Youth (Freie Deutsche Jugend (FDJ)) was the Communist youth organization of the government of the German Democratic Republic. From 6 to 14 the children were Thälmann Pioneers and then joined the FDJ. The Free German Youth does still exist after the reunification of Germany. 1985 the FDJ had 2.3 million members, even the Conservative chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel was a member.
