The Acton Institute is an organization based in Grand Rapids, Michigan that aims to "promote a free and virtuous society characterized by individual liberty and sustained by religious principles."[1] It conducts seminars to educate religious leaders, businessmen, teachers, researchers, and other members of the public. It also conducts research and produces publications in the areas of economics, theology, philosophy, and public policy (usually a combination thereof), in accordance with the group's mission. The institute was created in 1990 and named for Lord Acton of Britain, a Catholic historian and advocate of political and religious liberty during the 19th century.
