The monomyth is a theoretical "first myth" common to all human beings throughout the world, perhaps stemming from Jungian archetypical knowledge. The term was first coined and the theory made famous by American literary critic and author Joseph Campbell in his books The Hero with a Thousand Faces and The Masks of God, wherein he mapped out the typical monomythic passage in several elaborate stages through which the prototypical ur-hero would pass. They include "The Call," the "Apotheosis," and the "Return."
