Dennis MacAlistair Ritchie (1941-2011) was a key developer of Unix and its programming language C. He is also the co-author of the primary text on C, "The C Programming Language," known as K&R in recognition of Ritchie and his co-author, Brian Kernighan. Ken Thompson assisted Ritchie in developing Unix.
