Westboro Baptist Church, with its provocative motto "God Hates Fags", is run by extremist Fred Phelps. His viewpoint combines the mainstream Christian view that homosexuality is a sin with a "fire and brimstone" fundamentalist view that sinners literally burn in hell.
The church is not affiliated with any Baptist denomination. The church's members are almost entirely family members and are infamous for their protests and pickets at the funerals of soldiers who died in the line of duty, where they take the opportunity to denounce what they consider to be America's acceptance of homosexuality.
