Bob Barr is the 2008 Libertarian Candidate for President of the United States. He is formerly the Representative for Georgia's 7th district from 1995 to 2003.[1]. As a Congressman, he had a reputation as a staunch conservative, and was one of the leaders of the impeachment of Bill Clinton. Prior to his Congressional career, he was appointed by Ronald Reagan to be a United States Attorney, and before that he was employed by the CIA for several years. He is trained as lawyer and now runs a consulting firm.
Barr is a Christian. He is strongly opposed to abortion and believes that Roe v. Wade should be overturned as an improper imposition of federal power over the states. He opposes the income tax, and supports replacing it with the Fair Tax. He opposes federal bureaucracy, regulation, and the Nanny state. He opposes gay marriage, but has come to believe that this is a state's rights issue which should not be handled by the Federal government. Barr is strongly in favor of Second Amendment rights, and has been a member of the Board of Directors of the National Rifle Association since 1997.
Barr authored the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) which President Bill Clinton signed into law in 1996. As the Libertarian candidate for President, he now rejects those parts of DOMA which add to the power of the federal government. "...the Defense of Marriage Act insofar as it provided the Federal Government with a club to club down the rights of law-abiding American citizens, has been abused, misused and should be repealed. And I will work to repeal that." [2] Bob Barr has made known his opposition known to the Patriot Act. As a member of Congress, he voted in favor of the Patriot Act, but only after a sunset provision was inserted into the act. He is now dissatisfied with the way the Patriot Act has been interpreted and applied.
