Brigham Young (June 1, 1801 - August 29, 1877) was not the founder of The Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder-Day Saints, as is often incorrectly cited. He was the second prophet and the president.
After Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS Church, was killed in 1844 by a lynch mob while awaiting trial for chages of treason, Mr. Young was appointed the faith's new leader.
Young led a group from Nauvoo to Salt Lake City, where he established what the LDS church calls New Zion. While in Salt Lake Brigham Young started a school (Brigham Young University) and a clothing store, ZCMI (Zion Cooperative Mercantile Exchange). ZCMI was later purchased by Meyer & Frank, and in 2006 was purchased by Macy's. Prior to the sale, ZCMI was solely owned an operated by the LDS church.
