Sirius is the brightest star in the sky as seen from earth. It is 8.6 light years away from our planet and under the right conditions can be seen with the naked eye during the day. While there are stars that have a much higher absolute brightness, they are much further away from the earth and so don't appear as bright. Sirius can be seen from most of the earth, but can not be viewed at extreme northern latitudes.
