Sherbert v. Verner, 374 U.S. 398 (1963) was a U.S. Supreme Court case concerning the right to religious exercise and withholding of unemployment benefits.

Adeil Sherbert, a Seventh-Day Adventist, practiced the Sabbath on Saturdays and thus refused to work Saturdays. When she lost her job because of her refusal to work on these days, the South Carolina Employment Security Commission refused to give her unemployment benefits, as they found her failure to do Saturday work unacceptable.

The court concluded that the South Carolina Employment Security Commission's denial of Adeil Sherbert's benefits was unjustified because it impaired Sherbert's ability to exercise her religion freely and was therefore in violation of the first amendment and fourteenth amendment.
